Schurz  spoke out against the growing anti-Semitism both in New York and in Germany; Montefiore Hospital was  the Montefiore Home for Chronic Invalids on Avenue A  (York Ave today) and  E. 84th St. Here Schurz lashed out at the Anti Semites in his dedication speech because of the discriminatory practices leveled even at his wealthiest friends of New York’s Jewish Community.
