Carl Schurz’s and the Arts
in New York’s Gilded Age

There was little written about  Carl Schurz’s  artistic achievements and pursuits. He was friends not only with the very wealthy upper crust, but also with the artistic and musical community. He dined and rubbed shoulders with the writers , painters, and musicians of the era. A gifted pianist, he filled in playing Chopin at Carnegie hall when the contracted virtuoso became ill.
